About the event

As a leader in the APS, you have a critical role in assisting government to manage and respond to new and emerging challenges. As a leader integral competencies are required to ensure you and your team can best service your office and the public effectively.

This program is designed for those at the EL 1-2 level who want to increase their capability in both technical expertise and leadership. Adopting the content will enhance decision making, leadership attributes and assist with progression within the APS.

In each module we explore content and provide key outcomes on skills required to be effective as an EL 1-2. Our facilitator will provide insights into how they can be learnt and make the outcomes tangible and implementable when back in the workplace.

In this workshop attendees will enhance their capabilities to:

  • Enhance team productivity and performance to achieve results
  • Adopt a strategic mindset, an integral requirement at the EL 1-2 level
  • Build team capability while driving change
  • Utilise SQ+EQ and an agile mindset to increase leadership effectiveness.​

What to expect as a delegate:

  • Discover how to adopt a strategic mindset
  • Identify how to observe facts and reflect on the now and future
  • Learn strategy creation and strategy opposition
  • Understand effective strategy implementation - The 7 steps​​

Driving Transformational Change

  • Learn the foundations of leading change successfully
  • Learn change theories and practical approaches to driving change
  • Discover strategies to reinforce positive patterns through the change process
  • Understand the importance of implementing collective leadership

Day 2

Leading with Agility and Resilience

  • Learn the core component of agile leadership and its 9 principles
  • Understand how to lead with agility as an EL 1-2
  • Learn how to improve resilience and its importance in team cohesion
  • Explore strategies to create an agile and resilient culture to drive successful project execution​​

Doing Business with Social Intelligence (SQ) + Emotional Intelligence (EQ)

  • Discover the importance of EQ and identify your areas of growth
  • Learn the importance of SQ and actionable habits to increase influence
  • Explore the relationship between SQ + EQ and its impact of your team and the wider organisation
  • Identify how to improve SQ + EQ across your team to improve connection and delivery

Enhancing Team Productivity and Performance

  • Learn to lift team engagement and get buy-in
  • Understand how to coach teams to high performance
  • Discover team productivity and peformance enhancing tools and techniques
  • Learn how to foster a team dynamic of mutual value

In over 25 years as an executive leader in the Australian Public Service, Greg experienced the successes and challenges of managing people, implementing change, and delivering results by leading people through large restructuring and business transformation projects. Roles have included:

  • National Change and Workplace Relations Manager for the implementation of revised structures and processes in compliance sites in the Australian Department of Human Services;
  • National Operations Manager for the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal – leading the team that paid $78m in donated funds to flood victims in 2011;
  • National Project Director of digitisation projects and tools (delivering proof of concept and various redesign projects in a new processing environment for Centrelink, Australia);
  • International delegate to China recommending structures for managing fraud in medical insurance delivery for AUSAid under the China / Australia Governance Program; and
  • Other roles as a property & services manager, a training manager, a programs manager and as a government business consultant to multiple consultancy firms on projects that delivered fundamental structural change – including the redesign into business lines of the Centrelink service delivery model in 2005.​

Since 2012, Greg has worked as an executive business coach and corporate educator with National and International clients – including:

He most enjoys working with leaders and business owners to stimulate their thinking, their behaviour and their conversations so they can better focus on transforming their organisations.

Greg is a Director with Business Network International (BNI) and a business mentor and panel chairperson in the Qld Government’s Mentoring for Growth Program. He is a leader, a trainer, a social scientist, and an executive coach certified in multiple disciplines in the science of behaviour.
